I'm looking for a boat to use right up to 1st ice. I prefer an outboard motor, but I've seen a couple stern drives with closed cooling system. Logically, it seems that that type motor would be fine for freezing nights between trips, but am I missing anything that should steer me away? I've had a lot of outboards but not one stern drive.

Well as the seasons turn, I am really looking to redo the entire boat this offseason....I would like to have the hull entirely sanded, filled (small chips) and re-gelcoated, then also looking to have the flooring inside redone....

I really will not have the time to even attempt to do this by myself...I am located in Southeast Michigan, can anyone refer me to a reputable shop? I can leave the boat over the fall/winter/spring, so there is no rush to be honest...Actually I would prefer not to get the boat back til after April of next year...

Thanks again.

Guys... Looking for some help here. I Recently bought a 14ft alum boat so the kids and I can go fishing. Came with a motor but the motor doesnt run (Something I am going to work on this winter). Anyways. I found a 1998 Johnson 9.9hp short shaft outboard and am going to look at it this afternoon. This is my First boat and will be my first boat motor. So, needless to say, I know nothing about outboards.

What should I pay attention to when looking at a used Outboard? Are there any red flags that I should be aware of? Can the motor be started dry for a minute to make sure it runs up to my expectations?

If anyone can offer up some pointers on buying a used Outboard it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jeff

I began taking on water and then heard a sound that never was there before. From that rather lame explenation, anybody have any thoughts about what I should expect money wise (ouch). Any thoughts would be appreciated, I'll be looking around for place to take her. And believe me, I'll be like sheep going to slaughter. Thanks to all who respond.

I am trying to get my garage as empty as possible so I can do a little garage renovation, so I have sent a few truckloads to the scrap yard but I have 2 vintage motors that I am not going to mess with but look like they could be nice little projects for some one, at a glance they seem to be a early 50’s no-shift green 5hp Johnson, pull rope seems to be missing but looks to be very complete. The other looks like a mid 50’s 7.5hp Evinrude a shifter F-N-R , also looks very complete , I have not checked out anything on these motors and I am not going to be checking gear cases or compression or anything for that matter, if I start messing with them at all I wont be able to stop(I am a sick man) and with my limited time lately I need to stay on task.. I of course would be willing to help with advise or even with parts or whatever at a later date, you know after the garage is back in order. I don’t remember when or why I put these motors in
the garage.
So dose anyone have any interest.????

will adding fins to my outboard help out (appreciably) in getting on plane faster? or stay on plany longer when moving slower?

I guess the struggle I have with this is that , if it's such a great thing.... why isn't it stock by now on most outboards? has to be a draw back, right? if not, it would seem a competitive advantage in your sales/marketing tools! "Branta's motors out perform yamaha, merc, evinrudes with quicker hole shots, better gas consumption and planing ability even at the slowest of speeds...."

what's the true story?!

I already have a bilge pump, but considering we are out quite often duck hunting miles off shore in Nov, I'm also installing a spare bilge pump. My old boat I just had 2 but also had 2 different tubes leaving the boat. For the new boat I'm wondering for the 2nd bilge if I can just "T" into the pipe from the other bilge? Or are there backflow/pressure issues if I run one without the other or both at the same time. Would hate to run one and instead of having it go out the boat have it go into and out the 2nd bilge. Probably a dumb question.

Thanks

Been gone thru 4 times now (rebuilt) and the carb still floods out. Upon starting its runs fine but after 30 sec. or so you can see the gas starting to increase in the carb then it will stall due to flooding. Float has been checked 3 times now and is set to spec. (1/4 in). Rochester carb, 4 bbl. Float seems to be free moving and not hanging up anywhere.

Thinking of setting the float 1/32 to 1/16 leaner and see what happens. (to let less gas go in and close quicker)

Any ideas from carb experts?
