I know I am very late with the beans but this is the first time all year I could get to the edges of my plot (to wet). Anyhow I have 1 ac of lucious clover and I put the beans in a 40 yard swath around the edge of the clover. I usually put a Barassica blend in this area but was given some soy to try. Hopeing for a late frost for sure. My question is can I brodcast in some WW or something for when the soy gets hit by frost I still have something under the soy for the deer to eat. Any thoughts are welcome. Mike

The farmers in our area do it all the time. Just throw in some WW before a good rain and you will be OK..If the frost is really late you may need to use Rye instead....or mix the two!

I broadcast WW into my bean fields annually.

The timing of the WW planting should be after September 20th in my area to miss a certain insect pest. (Can't remember which it is).

The technique has worked very well for my plantings.

"......to miss a certain insect pest."

Hessian fly.

But if you are doing WW just for deer.....don't worry about it.

deermedic. I would top seed my beans with forage rape around the 1st of Sept. Then between the 15th and 20th of Sept Top seed again with WW. You will have a food source all seaon long. First Frost beans are gone the Forage rape will take over. repeated heavy frost the Rape will be gone but you will have allowed the WW to germinate and carry you through the winter months.

Thanks for the replys. Would it be ok to brodcast now before the beans come up or would it be better to wait tell Sept then go over top of the bean plants. I was thinking of doing in now so as to get good ground contact and even distibution but was worried the beans would shade it out or it would grow faster than the beans and not let them grow at all

If you think the deer will keep your grains clipped for you go for it. If not, I would wait to prevent the WW from maturing.
