Avery Boater's Dog Parka/Vest Question
Anyone have one?
Likes?
Dislikes?
Does it have the multiple bar tacks like the Cabela's vests do to allow greater trimming/fitting?
I like the Avery versus the Cabelas as it has both the zipper AND the grab handle so I can drag the doofus into the boat
Comments?

It gets my vote...but it's the only vest I've ever owned for a dog. It does have the tack stitches. First thing I did when I put it on my dog was grab those handles and carry my dog around the house, she didn't seem to be in any discomfort (pressure points in the abdomen). The zipper could have been engineered for better "starting". This is especially true when the dog knows that something fun is about to happen. I kind of half way velcro it closed and then start the zipper....seems to work for me.

Thanks for the great mental picture of you carrying your dog around. I bet that was funny, your little short hair being carried like a brief case. I want to see you try that with my girls(#85+ black labs). Good luck.
I don't have any experience with the vest, but do plan on getting them this year for each of my girls, beacuse of the carry handles that they have.

Cost
Thanks for the replies.......as far as cost goes, they're just a few bucks more than the Velcro only Cabelas vests.....and I like the added strap and zipper.....
My griffon is only 8 months old now, but I want to get him used to the idea of the vest STARTING NOW....and if that means I've gotta size it to fit for now and then buy another later, I'd rather do that than be fighting with the beast in the blind or the boat this fall/winter!!!!
Looks like I'll pull the trigger on one for now and see where he is size wise come this fall.
I'll post photos of the little bony guy once I get it!!!!

I have ran this new vest and it is really nice, like the ribbing and as well as the handles to drag him aboard. As for a trim and fit go works just as good as any other vest.
I give it three thumbs up

If you don't have a ramp, the handles are easier on the dog than using his collar to help him back into the boat.

Vest Arrived - What do you think?
As I've never owned one of these before - what do you think? This is a medium - I know at 8 months old, he's going to fill out more, but height-wise he should be close to being done growing "UP".
The Medium fits really well through the waist and the chest, but there's some minor buckling in the shoulders that I'm NOT concerned about - but there is A LOT of room in the neck that I AM WORRIED about.
Whadda ya all think (and dont say "Buy a Lab" or "Get a Chessie"....I like Otis, and he likes me - and he doesn't STINK LIKE A LAB!!!!! )
Here's the view from under his chin - LOTS OF ROOM in the neck.

This is a fine line. The advice that I was given was to give your dog ever so little slack in the vest. They will appreciate it being more comfortable. Now there are no two dogs alike, but I had the same concern when I got my vest. After some observation both on land and in the water, I determined the neck hole was fine. If it is a problem for you, I'd say break out the rivet gun and put a "hem" or whatever in it.

Naaaa I don't like that neck at all, your looking for trouble right there !
Brush, sticks of any kind is going to catch. But ? Since this is a "Pre Fit" ?
Do a little surgery, tuck it up so it fits fairly well, then cut it accordingly.
Then sew it back together, and give it a go. Also check underneath, you don't want to chafe the inside of his legs, you want room there.
And if you want any more assistance ? Tred lightly on stinky labs.....

Take a look at the right front leg in the last picture. Keep an eye out for the edge rubbing the leg raw. It looks like the edge is hiting the side of the leg. I used a new vest in Manitoba on Chase a few years ago. After a big day with tons of geese retrieved he had worn himself pretty bad due to the edge rubbing on the leg near his chest. I cut the vest back and have had no problems since.

I had the same problem with the chaffing.trimmed it back and worked great. Another good tip is to let them wear it around plenty before your first hunt so they can get used to it. Sweet looking pup!

I picked up the Avery vest last year from WebbedConnection. I'm very happy with it. I have a 83 lb retriever and I didn't need to do any trimming on it, but the design makes that fairly easy. Thumbs up on the vest!
Good Luck
